rethinking apologetics: when the old roadmaps stop working
a conversation with Luke Cawley and Justin Detmers
Hello from a surprisingly sweltering South of England. If you’ve heard Luke speak lately—hopefully in a nice air-conditioned room—you’ll know that he’s been doing a lot of thinking and research about why our existing approaches to evangelism and apologetics are increasingly ineffective, and how we we can shift our practice in these areas.
He often explores themes like technology, culture wars, politics, post-Christian culture, and the shift away from an emphasis on truth, and the ways each of these are profoundly affecting the way in which we need to communicate about Jesus.
If you want to catch up a little on some of his reflections in these areas, then you might appreciate a recent conversation he recorded with Justin Detmers, a US-based university professor and pastor. It’s part of the podcast series The Intersection With Dr J + Friends, and Luke and Justin range across many of these topics, exploring how they play out in both the UK and US contexts.
The episode, entitled When the Old Maps Stop Working: Rethinking Apologetics with Luke Cawley is available for free from all the usual places, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, and Overcast.
And, if you missed the latest episode of our podcast, the invisible castle podcast, then do take a look or have a listen. We think it’s a fairly urgent topic for the present moment: It’s all about how we can avoid becoming abusive leaders, and how we respond to those who are. Luke Cawley and Wes Poirot are on the couch for this one.
The audio is available for free on the usual platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Castbox, Pocket Casts, and wherever else you access your audio content. Just click on the links in the previous sentence to listen.
